By 2010,Guangzhou Port expects to achieve an annual throughput of over 320 million tons of cargo and 10 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units <(TEUs)> of shipping containers.
Recently, a report titled Suggestions on Implementing Guangzhou Port Development Plan during the Period of "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" was approved in principle at executive meetings of the Guangzhou Municipal Government. According to the plan, RMB 20 billion will be invested to strengthen the construction of container, food supply, ore, coal and oil docks in Nansha harbor and the construction of the Phase III navigation route of Guangzhou Port. As a result, Guangzhou port will develop progressively into the dominant port for international container transport and the largest integrated hub port in South China.
It is understood that during the period of "Tenth Five-Year Plan", Guangzhou Port completed port construction investments totaling RMB 5.984 billion, and added 44 production berths, increasing cargo throughput from 340 million tons to 920 million tons, representing an annual growth of 17.6 percent.
