Governor Huang Huahua passed the keys of vehicles to city-level officials
To the end of the "11th five -year" period, Guangdong's annual COD (chemical oxygen demand) will reduce to 899,000 ton and the emissions of sulfur dioxide will be no more than 1,100,000 ton, which are 15 percent lower than those in 2005.
Cities, towns and districts in the province had signed a responsibility form with the provincial government on September 18th.
Meanwhile, the province had distributed some facilities, including 28 vehicles, to 14 cities to the local governments. These facilities will be used in environmental protection projects.
"The signing of the responsibility form is a important move to build a "Green Guangdong" and stand for the start of Guangdong's over-all pollutant reducing campaign", said Xie Qianghua, Vice Governor of Guangdong province.
He also said the government should accelerate the environment-protection-related infrastructure construction, and efforts should concentrate in sewage treatment and power plants desulphurization. To the year 2010, up to 60 percent of the urban sewage will be properly treated, and the overall sewage treatment capacity will exceed 5 million tons per day.
Guangdong government will continue to advance the industry structure. The high-energy-consuming and labor-intensive projects will be gradually eliminated. Meanwhile the government will pour more in the pollution control and ecological conservation, and will improve the related policies.

Guangdong government held a working conference on environmental protection in Guangzhou on September 18.
