Starting this year, secondary vocational education students from poor households will be provided with a living subsidy of 1,000 yuan each school year.
According to the Guangdong Department of Education, this is thanks to a subsidy program established by the central government. Students majoring in geology, minerals, farming and forestry have priority.
Nowadays many middle school graduates in China have no access to continuing study in secondary vocational schools because of economic difficulties; and many others drop out during their schooling every year.
These problems have constrained the rapid and healthy development of vocational education.
