 It is learned from the "2006 Flower City (Guangzhou) Airport Economy Forum" that the construction of the third runway of Guangzhou New Baiyun International Airport will be completed before 2010. Baiyun Airport will then become a hub airport of the Asian-Pacific region, with an annual passenger flow of 40 million people and a cargo volume of 2 million tons a year, respectively on the top 20 and top 15 lists of the world.

According to the previous plan, the construction of the third runway would begin in 2010. With the rapid development of transportation, and for the 2010 Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou, it will now be finished ahead of schedule.

In addition, the preparation work of the 500 thousand square meters No.2 terminal building is now underway and construction will begin in 2008. The construction of the freight transportation hub has been incorporated into "The Eleventh Five-year Logistic Development Plan of Guanghzou".

Liu Zijing, President of Guangdong Airport Management Corporation, said that a hub airport plays an important role in the development of "airport economy".

In the long term plan, Baiyun Airport, with five runways, will be able to handle 95 million passengers and over 6 million tons of freight per year. The area of the terminals will reach 1.16 million square meters and the freight transportation area will be 418 thousand square meters.
