Quit playing games: Shenzhen's grand new library opened to the public July 12. For months The Buzz, being the consummate bookworm, had been itching to go and take a look, but held back after reading reports in the Shenzhen Daily about how mobs of overenthusiastic gawkers were running amok in our fair city's newest landmark.
With patience finally evaporating Tuesday, The Buzz made the trip to the Shenzhen Library on Yitian Road, bubbling with curiosity. At first everything seemed just perfect! The library was splendid and spacious, with an environment that seemed both comfortable and convenient. There were rows and rows of gleaming new computers to surf the Internet or access the electronic resources in the library.
But - and this is where the inevitable "But" comes in - there was a queue of some 20 people waiting to use the terminals. One of the three librarians in the computer room said individuals were allowed to use a computer for a maximum of 30 minutes. However, many of the computer users were using the terminals to play online games! When asked about this, a security guard said this was allowed under the present rules.
"What a waste of my time, and many others', to wait for them to finish their games!" The Buzz fumed in irritation. "Is this a public library or an Internet cafe挂" No doubt others in the queue felt the same way.
Artist needs paper: Chinese-born Xiao Huixiang, the 74-year-old Los Angeles-based artist, is off to Beijing for the possible auction of her female nudes masturbating. Back in the early 1980s Xiao, who The Buzz had dinner with recently, achieved notoriety for a large mural entitled "The Spring of Science" at the Beijing Capital International Airport, with its female nudes and abstract symbols. This time around Xiao has been frustrated in her attempts to find large sheets of drawing paper. The paper she uses in L.A. is made in Taiwan, but she hasn't been able to find any here yet. Suggestions on where to procure some will be highly appreciated.
