Customarily, Guangdong people consider "water as a symbolic for money". And now, the water from Pei River will continuously be introduced to Guangzhou neighborhood and urban area through a series of newly built water transfer projects.

On July 29th, the first phase of Guangzhou Northern Water System construction was officially started and Mr. Su Zequn, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou City attended the commencement ceremony. The investment for the first phase totaled BMB 1.268 billion, including Guanghe Pumping Station, Diversion Canal and Baiyun Lake. The whole project was designed in accordance with the flood contro1 standard against the flood occurred once in 200 years. Shijinghe will be the first to benefit from the project.

"Baiyun Lake will also play an important role in water conservancy". According to Bureau of Water Resources of Guangzhou Municipality, 48 years ago, Mr. Zhu Guang, former mayor of Guangzhou City, called on cadres and masses to voluntarily build up Dongshan Lake, Liwan Lake, Lu Lake, and Liuhua Lake and added beautiful scenes to Guangzhou. The Baiyun Lake in Huanjiao will again lift the history, which will start construction at the end of 2006 with a water area of 1.057 kilometers, larger than the total area of the former four lakes.

In addition, the neighboring environment will also be renovated to complete an ecological park, covering 2.07 kilometers with the functions of water conservancy, water replenishing, water & flood storage and leisure.

However, the Northern Water System is not an isolated project. Together with the "Two Tributaries and One River" project under construction, it will make up of an integrate water diversion system.
