Floods triggered by tropical storm Bilis are finally retreating in China's coastal provinces after at least 198 people died, local officials said. But rain was still forecast for Hunan and Guangdong provinces today and tomorrow.
President Hu Jingtao delivered his concern over the people in the flood-stricken area of Guangdong province, through a call to Zhang Dejiang, Secretary of Guangdong Provincial CPC committee last night.
In Guangdong Province, the worst hit, the death toll rose to 54, about 6.49 million people have been affected and 40,000 houses were destroyed by the deadly storm till yesterday, according to People's Daily.
People struggled to cope with water shortages, ravaged roads and other damage, the China News Service reported yesterday.
Meanwhile, traffic, water, electricity and communications have returned to normal in Fuzhou, capital of East China's Fujian Province, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

4,200 prisoners rescued in Guangdong; 204 dead nationwide
Six more people in South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were confirmed dead on Tuesday, bringing the death toll from the rainstorms and flooding triggered by the tropical storm Bilis across China to 204.
In Guangdong, over 4,200 inmates have been rescued from two prisons in Shaoguan City after floods left them stranded for about two days.

Traffic resumes on artery railway linking Beijing, Guangzhou
Traffic resumed on the flood-ravaged trunk railway linking Beijing and Guangzhou by midday Tuesday, the Guangzhou Railway Group said.
By 5:30 a.m., railway workers had repaired most damaged sections along the railway and Tuesday morning's trial run of a locomotive from Lechang to Shaoguan, two worst ravaged points, proved trains could pass safely, said the group's President Wu Junguang.
