Shenzhen can provide the best stage for a global university athletic event

Shenzhen is a city ablaze with enthusiasm and full of boundless creativity. The city has already drawn up a plan to provide the best platform for international university athletic competitions. Its goal is to host a Universiade with the greatest number of participants, thus pushing the level of participation and influence of the Universiade to new heights.

In 2011, Shenzhen will turn the Universiade into a great family gathering for the world's youth. Our goal is to attract a total of more than 180 participating delegations, a record high in the history of the Universiade.

Shenzhen can provide the utmost convenience for the Universiade

Shenzhen, the most beautiful coastal city in South China, is known as an international garden city. Along its 230-kilometer coastline, there are the most attractive beaches in China, the most popular seaside swimming areas, a national nature reserve of mangroves and a national wetland reserve. It boasts one of the best habitats in China. The U.N. Environment Program has conferred upon it the title of one of "the World's 500 Most Environment-friendly Cities."

Separated from Hong Kong by a narrow river, Shenzhen is the most open special economic zone in China, where one can enjoy all the conveniences available in a city like Hong Kong.

Shenzhen has the largest number of international ports in China, and is also the only city with land, sea and air ports. It is one of the most important gateways between China and the world. More than half the people who cross the Chinese border each year do so here.

Within an hour's drive from the center of the city, one can find the most vibrant airport cluster in China. The area has five large international airports supporting more than 100 international flight routes and more than 600 international daily flights.
Modern hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and tourist destinations of Shenzhen and Hong Kong will also make the athletes and tourists feel at home.

Shenzhen will kindle the passion of university students around the world by hosting the Universiade

There are currently more than 100 million university students in the world, one fifth of whom are in China. As of 2005, China had 2,236 institutes of higher learning with more than 23 million university students. The rapid growth of higher education in the country has made China home to the largest number of university students in the world. At present, there is an upsurge in passion here for the bid to host the Universiade, and the bidding has won the enthusiastic support of university students in Beijing, Shanghai and elsewhere in China.

Shenzhen and its environs are home to the most densely-packed universities in southern China, and one of the most important bases for higher education in the country. There are more than 60 universities, three university towns, and more than 800,000 university students within an hour's drive from Shenzhen.

Shenzhen will launch a new surge in the development of university sports

There are more than 5,000 sports venues in Shenzhen. Sport has become a way of life here.

Shenzhen ranks among the top cities in China in terms of the number of people actively playing sports. It also stands out as a city with splendid achievements in sports. Since the establishment of Shenzhen as a city, it has hosted 133 major domestic and international sports events. Athletes representing Shenzhen have won a total of 486 titles in competitions of various types and at different levels, including 25 titles in international competitions and 151 gold medals in national championships. They have broken or set 14 world records and 14 national records.

Shenzhen can provide the Universiade with strong financial support

Shenzhen's economy has grown 1,800 times over the last 26 years. In 2005 the city's GDP reached more than US$60 billion. The value of exports exceeded US$100 billion. Shenzhen is already the world's fourth-largest container port, and the fourth-largest airport and tourist destination in China. It is an important high-tech, logistics and financial center in Southeast Asia. With the fastest economic growth in China, it is the vanguard of China's modernization drive. In terms of comprehensive economic strength, Shenzhen ranks 3rd among all the large cities in China, after Beijing and Shanghai.

Shenzhen is located on the "core strip" of the Pearl River Delta. This area comprises the cities of Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macao, and Guangzhou, etc., covering a total area of 42,000 square kilometers with a population of more than 40 million people. It is the most developed, urbanized, and cosmopolitan region in China. It is also an area with the most vibrant commercial market in the country.

Shenzhen can offer the Universiade efficient government support

Shenzhen has listed hosting of the 26th Universiade as a landmark project of innovation in its campaign to develop itself into an international city. As soon as Shenzhen unveiled its plan to bid to host the 26th Universiade, it got close attention and full support from the Chinese Central Government, and the Guangdong Provincial Government.

The Guangdong Provincial Government and the Shenzhen Municipal Government are more than willing to play the role of "voluntary workers" for the Universiade. In strict compliance with the FISU Statutes, they are committed to rendering the most powerful financial support and all-round services to the games, including subsidies to all participants and funding for athletes from less developed countries. Shenzhen will mobilize and put into use its resources to create an ideal environment, provide top-grade facilities and services for the games.
