Officials in Guangzhou have told couples intending to tie the knot that they must book in advance if they want to get hitched on certain auspicious dates.

Marriage registration offices have had to turn away scores of couples, as the bureaus were already full to bursting on lucky days for marriage in the first half of the year.

According to the Chinese calendar, 2006, which is a leap year, is believed to be a good one for marriage. As a result, local officials have predicted that more than 60,000 local couples plan to marry this year.
