Recently, Zhang Guangning, Mayor of Guangzhou, made an investigation and survey into Guangzhou's equipment manufacturing industry. Mr. Zhang said that relevant layout and inductions should be reinforced to accelerate the booming of enterprises and build Guangzhou into an important equipment manufacturing industrial base in China.

In 2005, the gross industrial output value of Guangzhou's machinery equipment industry reached RMB 140.4 billion, accounting for 23.3 percent of Guangzhou's gross industrial output value and 33.1 percent of Guangzhou's industrial profit.

Mr. Zhang said that Guangzhou had integrated industrial systems and complete industrial categories. Therefore, it should seize the opportunity of the state's support of the equipment manufacturing industry and become an important equipment manufacturing industrial base of the nation.

Mr. Zhang pointed out that the emphases during the period of the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" should be building power equipment, environment protection equipment, power generating equipment and transmission and transformation equipment, light & textile equipment, rail-bound transit equipment, digital machine tool and digital control system. The equipment industrial park should come into being as soon as possible, surrounding the two industrial development axes of progressing towards the south and east and lay a reasonable distribution of south, east and north industrial convergence zones.

Mr. Zhang went on to say that at present and for the near future Guangzhou should strengthen enterprises' independent innovation subject status, impel enterprises to build research and development bodies, encourage enterprises to enhance co-operation with higher education institutions and scientific research institutes and carry through multiple co-researches. At the same time, Guangzhou shall facilitate the convergence of state-owned capital to the advantageous industries of equipment manufacturing industry, drive the adjustment and the optimization of enterprise ownership structure via the introduction of foreign and civilian capital and encourage private enterprises progress in accordance with the development direction of the equipment manufacturing industry.
