The Qingzang railway is scheduled to be open to traffic on July 1; Guangzhou's first train using such a railway is expected to carry less than 600 passengers to Tibet.
Passengers will mainly consist of government officials and members of the media. Due to cost hikes and sparse tickets, Guangzhou's larger travel agencies are not expected to launch the railway trip to Tibet till the middle of July.
Travelers booking railway trips to Tibet has reached several thousand and will be charged from 5,000 yuan to 7,000 yuan per person. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway starts from Xinin, Qinghai province to Lhasa city, Tibet, traversing the slopes on both sides of the Himalayas covering, 1,956 kilometers in total. It is the longest plateau railway ever built at the highest altitude in the world.
