Liu Zhongqing, the East Timor manager of a Shenzhen trading company, hugs his wife after returning to Shenzhen from the riot-torn country yesterday. Liu and Ding Jianzhong, one of his colleagues, were back home on the day by chartered flight by the Chinese Government. The Foreign Ministry said earlier that about 500 Chinese lived in East Timor, among whom about 200 had already left.
Violence took place in East Timor in late April after the East Timorese Government decided to sack almost half of the country's soldiers, who protested against poor conditions and staged a strike.
