The "South Sea God", a replica of a Chinese sailing vessel of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, arrived in Guangzhou on the evening of May 23. The vessel is to enter trial commercial operation in June.

In July, the "South Sea God" will serve as a protocol vessel, carrying His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden, to celebrate the arrival of the replica of the Swedish sailing ship "G?theborg" in Guangzhou. The "South Sea God" will rendezvous with the "G?theborg" and then guide her into Guangzhou harbor and on to the Temple of the South Sea God.

The "South Sea God" incorporates features of Cantonese ships and official vessels of the Ming and Qing dynasties, with a dragon head on both its left and right sides, a design common to Chinese dragon boats of the time. The craft's design incorporates a lower hold, two decks, several private VIP compartments, an open sea-viewing platform, and an "Eternal Tranquility" sacrificial archway. The lower hold is designed to display exhibits of the ancient Maritime Silk Route, artifacts from ancient vessels, porcelain recovered from the wreck of the original Gotheborg, and pictures and documents illustrating the history of 18th century maritime transport.

The "South Sea God" will also take part in a grand sacrificial ceremony at the Temple of the South Sea God and feature as part of a Sino-Swedish international maritime cultural gala with the "G?theborg", in which they will be joined by another Cantonese-style vessel, the "Jinhuaxing".

The vessel is currently moored at a berth at the Pazhou Convention and Exhibition Center where she is undergoing final equipment testing. Following her protocol duties in July, the "South Sea God" will be opened to the public.
