Shenzhen on alert for fake medicine

SHENZHEN hospitals are on high alert against medicines produced by a manufacturer in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province after one of its products caused kidney failure in several patients in Guangdong.

The State medicine watchdog banned all the medicines produced by Qiqihar No. 2 Medicine Manufacturing Company, a private company in Qiqihar City, on Friday, after receiving reports that the factory's Armillarisin A injection had caused kidney failure in several patients in April.

Shenzhen's food and drug administration yesterday ordered all pharmacies to withdraw products from the Qiqihar manufacturer. It urged people to call its hotline 8319-0161 if they found such products on market.

A spokesperson of the administration said there was no Qiqihar-made Armillarisin A in Shenzhen, which bought Armillarisin A from Southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Armillarisin A is mainly for treating acute or chronic cholecystitis and chronic and atrophic gastritis.

Meanwhile, investigators in Qiqihar yesterday announced the tainted Armillarisin A vials were produced using fake propylene glycol purportedly manufactured by China Geology Mining Co. Taixing Chemical Factory in Jiangsu Province.

Police in Jiangsu has detained Wang Guiping, who allegedly sold the fake chemical to the Qiqihar company.

Few drugs manufactured by the Qiqihar factory were found in Shenzhen, an investigation by the Southern Metropolis Daily showed.

The city's major pubic hospitals, including the No. 2 Shenzhen People's Hospital, Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital, and Shenzhen People's Hospital, did not sell medicines from Qiqihar 2nd Medicine Manufacturing Company, it found.

However, another hospital in Nanshan was found selling drug produced by the Qiqihar factory, the newspaper found Saturday. Staff with the hospital said medicine had been purchased a while ago, and was seldom used.

In Heilongjiang, however, a three-day inspection by the province's medicine watchdog found 2,377 pharmacies and medical institutions selling 44 products made by the Qiqihar factory. A total of 1,179,940 vials were confiscated. However, only a tiny number of Armillarisin A injections were found.

The Qiqihar factory produced 14,511 boxes of Armillarisin A injections by May 4, with 1,200 boxes sold to Guangdong, a CCTV report said. Several patients in a Guangdong hospital developed kidney failure after being administered the drug in late April.

Investigation into the Qiqihar factory continues.
