More than 750 people participated in a police action Saturday targeting pickpockets on buses, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.
The participants included uniformed and plainclothes policemen, security guards and volunteers arranged by the city's bus group.
A police spokesperson said that the public security bureau had asked all police personnel to be on duty on weekends during the anti-pickpocket campaign, which began last month. He did not say when the campaign would end but disclosed that all the regular yearly leave for the police had been canceled to secure enough manpower for the duration of the campaign.
At least six suspected pickpockets were rounded up Saturday, the report said.
The police said that 411 suspected pickpockets and 56 gangs of thieves had been detained since the campaign started last month. Twenty-six suspects had been arrested and would be taken to court.
