Guangzhou will hold an auction of mascot car registration number plates between April 22 and April 23, when 300 mascot plates will come under the hammer. The auction will be the first to be held in Guangzhou since September 1, 2004, when number selection payments were abolished.

The car registration numbers, which were selected by the vehicle Administration Office of Guangzhou Public Security Bureau, will have reserve prices established by an Auction Commission under the Guangzhou Financial Bureau.

Guo Xiling, Director of Guangzhou Financial Bureau, revealed that proceeds from the auction would be used for traffic facility construction and to aid traffic accident victims.

Sources state that a total of 2,700 mascot numbers are to be auctioned this year, with preliminary planning being to auction 300 per month, with auctions being arranged at weekends so more people can participate.

Public opinion generally considers it a good move to auction mascot numbers as a way of raising funds for traffic improvements.
