By the time that the city's 11th Five-year plan is complete, it is envisaged that the biomedical industry will be worth some RMB 80 billion and have become one of Guangzhou's pillar industries.

Development of the biomedical industry will focus on pharmaceutical biotechnology, modern Chinese medicine, chemical medicine, genetic medicine and oceanic biotechnology.

Development of Guangzhou's biomedical industry will be supported by the development of the Guangzhou International Biology Island (GIBI) research and development base, the GIBI intermediate test base and the Guangzhou Science Park industrialization platform.

It is envisaged that Guangzhou will develop into China's premier center for the export of medicines and that globally competitive companies will be established.

A government report states that this year, Guangzhou will put every effort into developing modern industrial systems, finding better ways to boost its economy; and, to further develop its pillar, equipment and manufacturing industries. Among these, the government will put greater effort into the development of the vehicle and information industries, and, the development of biomedicine as a pillar industry.
