A deputy to the ongoing Guangzhou NPC (National People's Congress) Committee proposed to break the hindrance of household registration system and authorize migrant workers to become NPC delegates.
The deputy Li Tingting said migrant workers are indispensable contributors to Guangzhou's prosperity, so they should enjoy the right to have their voices heard in Guangzhou NPC Committee, the top legislative body. Li was echoed by president of Guangzhou Academy of Social Sciences Li Jiangtao.
He agreed that migrants' right to voting and be elected is obviously a reform direction for election law, and work should be done to amend the election law and avoid a double election rights problem.
The current election law regulates that electorates can enjoy political rights in the place of their household registration, which restrict migrants to employ their right in Guangzhou
