The lawsuit brought by a local transport company against global shipping giant Maersk will begin trial March 6 at Luohu District People's Court, the Shenzhen container trailers association said Tuesday.

The plaintiff, Shenzhen Iron Power Container Transport Company, a member of the association, claims a token compensation of 30 yuan (US$3.75) from Maersk.

Maersk announced that it would charge Chinese shippers or transport companies who handle its containers 25 yuan per full container in Shenzhen and 50 yuan in seven other Chinese ports including Xiamen, Fuzhou, Ningbo, Shanghai, Dalian, Tianjin and Qingdao under the name of "equipment management fee" from May 1 last year.

The charge replaced various fees previously collected in different Chinese cities by Maersk from 2003, such as the 30-yuan document exchange fee in Shenzhen and the 45-yuan sealing fee in Xiamen, which had long been under fire from Chinese shippers and related container transport companies.

Iron Power sued the shipping giant in December 2005. More than 10 industry associations nationwide have voiced their support for the company, said Xu Xiaoming, associate secretary of the container trailers association.

Interestingly, the case brought by a Xiamen transport company against Maersk will begin trial March 7. The logistics company Prime International (Xiamen) Co. Ltd. initiated a series of boycotts in Xiamen last year against Maersk, which then decided to bring an end to its business relationship with the company.
