An exhibition to showcase over 1,000 dinosaur fossils from all over the world opens at the landscape and floral expo park near the Overseas Chinese Town today.
Claiming to be the world's largest of its kind, the exhibition will display fossils of dinosaurs, which had once roamed the vast expanses of ancient China - Ermei Dinosaur (1.8 meters long and five meters tall), Mamenxi Dinosaur (24 meters long and seven meters tall), and Parrot Dinosaur (14 centimeters long).
Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils from the United States and other species from Britain and Canada will also be showcased to visitors. This is the first time for these fossils to be in China.
The Tyrannosaurus Rex was 14 meters long and weighed 6.5 to seven tons. It lived 145 to 165 million years ago during the Cretaceous period.
The exhibit also includes fossils of dinosaur eggs and prehistoric food, and educational documentaries about the evolution and extinction of dinosaurs.
The exhibition will last until March 31 with an admission fee of 70 yuan (US$8.6) per person.
Zhang He, head of the city's ancient extinct life museum, said Shenzhen was planning a dinosaur theme park, but the site has yet to be decided.
Antuoshan in western Futian Districts, Dapeng Peninsula in Longgang District and Tanglang Mountain in Nanshan could be among the choices, Zhang said.
