Shenzhen recorded 134 days with smog last year, 41 days fewer than the previous year, an indication that the city's air quality is improving.
Officials with the municipal environmental protection bureau said that the average concentration level of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and inhalable suspended particles have all decreased, of which the average concentration level of nitrogen dioxide has met the nation's first-level air quality standard.
There were 360 days of excellent or fairly good air quality, six days more than the year earlier. Officials also said that the water quality of the Shenzhen Reservoir has shown marked improvement.
The environmental protection system and relevant mechanism will be overhauled in line with the city government's commitment to build an eco-city, Guo Yurong, director of the municipal environmental protection bureau, said.
The municipal environmental protection bureau will put in place a comprehensive monitoring system this year and work with relevant departments to relocate serious polluters in the city. They will target oxhide and electroplating factories in the city this year, Guo said.
