South China's Guangdong Province registered 25 victims in 31 food poisoning cases last year, the local food safety authority announced here Monday.
A total of 1,030 local residents suffered food poisoning in the31 registered accidents, including 15 in rural areas, nine in schools and seven at factories and construction sites, according to a report released Monday by the provincial food safety committee.
Most of the accidents were caused by mushrooms, swellfish, or contaminated food.
Officials with the provincial health department said that Guangdong Province faces a serious situation of food safety as many people, particularly those live in outlying mountainous regions, still maintain the habit of eating wild plants and animals, some of which are poisonous.
