South China Botanical Garden recently announced that construction on the large-scale greenhouse is making steady progress, including the completion of the main structures and continued construction of the alp and desert greenhouses.
The greenhouse project was initiated by South China Botanical Garden, Guangdong Government and Guangzhou Government. The entire greenhouse covers 10,000 square meters. Once the construction is completed, it will be Asia's largest greenhouse. It is expected that the building will be open to the public by December, 2006. The greenhouse is purposed to protect South China Botanical Garden's tropical and sub-tropical plants over the winter. It also serves as a center for scientific research and development, and operates educational and sightseeing functions. Visitors can view plants from the tropical rain forest, desert and Alps.
