SHENZHEN will make the cultural industry account for more than 10 percent of the city's GDP by 2010, and make the cultural consumption of Shenzhen residents account for one-fifth of their total consumption, a municipal meeting was told Thursday.

The city plans to develop the cultural industry as one of its four pillar industries, along with high-tech, logistics and finance.

Beginning January 2006, the city will boost the cultural industry in three ways. First, Shenzhen will build design centers for large cultural organizations and projects. Second, the city will assist companies in promoting their creative products in the market by setting up centers for production and display. Finally the city will enhance the training of personnel.

The Shenzhen Municipal Government said it would speed up the creation of such cultural centers.

The centers will be operated for a trial period of one year, and will be shut down after one year if found not to be up to standard.

Animation has been targeted as a priority industry.

Shenzhen will try to make itself a leading animation base in China and the world by assisting animation companies in a number of ways.

Nanshan District should set up an industry garden for animation production, the meeting said. The city also plans to set up an international cartoon film center.
