Dragboat race possible to join 2010 Asian Games
Latest Updated by 2005-06-10 11:24:13

Dragon boat racing may be admitted into the 2010 Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou,South of China, according to an official with the Asian Olympic Council (AOC).

The AOC sports committee member Preeda Rodphothong, while attending ongoing fourth Yangtze River Three Gorges International Dragonboat Racing tournament in Yichang, central China, was quotedas saying by Tuesday's Chinese Sports Daily that his visit here ismainly to study the possibility of dragon boat racing becoming a medal sport in Asian Games.

The paper said that Asian Dragon Boat Federation has applied for the sport to be included in the Asian Games after becoming a member of the AOC.

The dragon boat racing, already the medal sport of the Southeast Asian Games, will make its debut as a competition sport in the fourth East Asian Games to be held in Macao, China late this year.

Li Wenyong, vice secretary general of the Chinese dragon boat association, said that the international federation of the sport, founded in 1991, has developed into a body with 48 member associations.

Up to 100 countries and regions hold dragon boat races regularly every year, in particular during the period from May to November, when thousands of races are held across the world with tens of millions of people participating.

Dragon boat is the largest flat-water racing canoes in the world, decorated with dragon heads and tails.

A crew of 20 paddlers, paced by a drummer at the bow and guidedby a steersman at the stern, combine power and rhythm to achieve acceleration and speed over a course of 400 or 500 meters. A perfectly synchronized team is not only visually spectacular but almost always defeat a stronger but less coordinated competitor.
