The 10th congress of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) opens on May 21 in Guangzhou.
Overall affluent Guangdong is expected in 2011

Guangdong aims to "build an overall affluent society by 2011, with the Pearl River Delta area as its lead, to realize basic socialist modernization," according to the province's Communist Party Secretary Zhang Dejiang.
Zhang made this remark in his report on the opening of the 10th Guangdong Provincial CPC Congress which opened on Monday.
South China's Guangdong Province, currently the biggest GDP contributor on the Chinese mainland, expects to see its GDP exceeding 4 trillion yuan (519.4 billion U.S. dollars) by 2011, with an annual growth by 9 percent over the next five years. While the province's per capita GDP will hit 40,000 yuan and achieve an annual growth rate of 8 percent by 2011.

Guangdong Through Lens (2002-2007)

Guangdong successfully defended its title as the national GDP champion in the past five years, increasing its contribution to national GDP from 1/9 to 1/8. Meanwhile, the province made effort to switch to greener development track and has its energy consumption and pollution drop.
The provincial government put people's livelihood top of their work chart. And the whole province overcame the hard times of SARS, bird flu and several hurricanes as the public health system and crisis management were improved. Both rural and urban residents saw their income increased. And education of all levels saw growth of their enrollment rates.
Meanwhile, great progress have achieved in public service, culture and other social systems.

Part I: Ecomomy
Innovation: The Province saw new progress in innovation and R&D in 2006. The province finished 22 key technology R&D and innovation projects, including "Core chip design and manufacturing".

Urbanization: Guangdong is China's most urbanized province, with its urbanization rate climbing up to 60.68 percent by 2005, also 17.69 percent higher than the country's average.

Industry:

Guangdong, in its long-term strategy, is expected to be one of the largest petrochemical industrial bases in China and eyes the Asian market.

It is estimated that Guangdong 's overall petrochemical production value will total 730 billion RMB in 2010, with an average annual increase of 20 percent in the next five years.

Less-developed regions of Guangdong catching up:

Guangdong is striving to achieve balanced development within the whole province. The northern region and both the west and east wings of Guangdong are expected to continue a strong momentum and become the new keys driving the province's development.

Part II: People

The provincial government put people's livelihood top of their work chart. And the whole province overcame the hard times of SARS, bird flu and several hurricanes as the public health system and crisis management were improved. Both rural and urban residents saw their income increased.

Public health: The provincial government attached great importance to the well-being and health of the people. The Party leaders joined the people fighting against SARS in 2003.

2011 Summer Universiade
The town accomodated 10 top universities in Guangdong, making the cross-uni academic exchange much easier. Zhang Dejiang, Party Secretary of Guangdong Province and other officials in Guangdong cheer with citizens. Some 1,000 citizens perform tai chi in SZ. The performance showed the residents' support for the city's bid to host the 2011 Universiade.
