China is willing to cooperate with the international community to protect the earth's eco-system and contribute to mankind's sustainable development, said Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan in Beijing on Tuesday (June 5).

"With the deterioration of global ecological conditions, environmental protection has been put on the international agenda, and China, as a responsible member of the international community, is willing to take part in international cooperation to tackle this problem," Zeng said at the opening ceremony of the International Ecological Forum.

The forum, co-hosted by China's State Forestry Administration and conservation group World Wildlife Foundation, was part of the Foundation's annual meeting.

China's sustainable development is faced with huge pressures as it is short of arable land and fresh water and constantly suffers from natural disasters, said Zeng.

In addressing these problems, China has implemented a number of tree-planting projects and they have yielded "remarkable results", according to Zeng.

Zeng said China will also intensify efforts to adjust industrial structure, improve technology, increase spending on conservation and strengthen monitoring.
