Seventeen people were confirmed dead and six others injured in a fire that occurred early on Sunday in Huangyan District of Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province.

The fire broke out at 1:40 a.m at a two-story store on Luting Road in eastern Huangyan District. The second floor of the store is used as living quarters for migrant workers, said Wu Jiye, deputy head of Huangyan District Government.

Fifteen fire trucks and 61 fire fighters were sent to quench the fire, which was put out at 3:10 a.m.

The six injured people have been sent to hospital. Doctors said their injuries were not life-threatening.

Senior officials of the governments of Zhejiang Province and Taizhou City went to the Taizhou First People's Hospital on Sunday afternoon to express sympathy and solicitude for the injured.

Local police are investigating the cause of the accident.
