The 2008 Olympic Games will not be held in a season of frequent sandstorms and the goal of "Green Olympics" can be realized, said Liu Tuo, director of the National Bureau to Combat Desertification under the State Forestry Administration on April 20th.
Liu said China's idea of the 2008 Olympic Games is Green Olympics, and one of the indicators is reduction of dust and inhalable particulate matter. Cogent reasons convince China that the goal of "Green Olympics" can be realized in 2008.
Liu analyzed that the Olympic Games will be held in August, while sandstorms occur most frequently in March, April and May. Thus the Olympic Games sidesteps the season of frequent sandstorms in Beijing. In the spring of 2008, dust should be less than usual under identical climatic conditions as Beijing should have achieved considerable vegetation restoration and environment improvement through ecological control and protection in recent years. The vegetation will play its role in reducing sand and dust at that time. Editor: Yan
