Latest Updated by 2005-05-11 09:29:54

A reception was held here Tuesday to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Samoa.

Visiting Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi told those assembled that the friendship and ties between Samoa and China have steadily grown and strengthened since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations.

"This very agreeable state of affairs in my view reflects the willing efforts of the two governments to foster greater understanding between the two countries," Tuilaepa said.

He also said that Samoa would continue to uphold the one-China policy and support the Anti-Secession Law adopted by China's Tenth National People's Congress, voicing the hope that the reunification of China will be soon achieved.

Peng Peiyun, president of China-Oceania Friendship Association, told the reception that the establishment of long-term cooperative relations between the two nations "serves the common interests of the two peoples and is conducive to regional and world peace and stability."

Peng, who is also a former vice-Chairwoman of Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), expressed her appreciation for Samoa's firm adherence to the one-China policy and the understanding and support that the country renders to China in international affairs.
