What foods kids should watch out for this autumn
Latest Updated by 2004-09-07 09:12:01

Autumn brings children not just the golden season for sightseeing but also a dazzling variety of food. It is a misconception that children are healthier the more they eat. Here are four traps which parents easily fall into.

Trap one: eating too many persimmons

Autumn is the harvest season of persimmon. The colorful outlook and delicious taste make it a favorite food for children. Rich in sucrose, glucose, vitamin C and various minerals, it helps to ease coughing. However, if you eat too many persimmons before a meal, the persimmon's gel-like substance will harden when mixed with food already in the stomach. Stomach pain, vomiting and indigestion will soon appear. It is better to eat one to two pared persimmons after a meal, so it will not produce any chemical effect in your stomach.

Trap two: eating too much sugarcane

Sugarcane is popular among kids. The great amount of sucrose in the sugarcane will turn to high blood sugar density after digestion. The extra injection of sugar will lead to a reduced PH value in the child's blood, greatly diminishing the effectiveness of the immune system. They will easily catch a cold or fever, insomnia, get irritated and have a bad appetite. Eating no more than 50 grams a day is the most suitable amount.

Trap three: eating too many oranges

The lovely, juicy, sour and sweet taste makes oranges a perennial favorite in the autumn fruit market. Rich in citric acid and apple acid, it can alleviate coughing, indigestion and is an ideal food treatment for breath-related ailments.

Eating too many oranges will cause a sudden increase in carotene in the human body, leading to symptoms such as bad appetite, ill temper and insomnia. Parents should give their children two to three oranges a day.

Trap four: eating too many crabs

Crab sales always hit a high in autumn. The high protein and mineral content of crab make it a highly nutritious food. However, it can cause anaphylactic reactions in the stomachs of sensitive people. Bacteria in crabs can also cause intestinal disease.

Persimmon and crab should never be eaten together, as they will cause abdominal pains, vomiting. Crabs should be dipped in ginger vinegar before eating to kill the bacteria.
