Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld extended his contract at the German Bundesliga football champions beyond the season until June 2008, the club said in a statement Thursday.

Hitzfeld, who coached the Munich 1998-2004 and returned in January to replace Felix Magath, has led Bayern to three wins in six Bundesliga games and a Champions League quarter-final spot since Magath was fired. Hitzfeld's initial deal was until the end of this season.

"We are happy that we could reach this decision so quickly and in an uncomplicated fashion together with Ottmar Hitzfeld," said Munich general manager Uli Hoeness.

"Ottmar Hitzfeld has convinced us with his great work over the past weeks and with the way he leads the team," Hoeness added.

Hoeness said that Hitzfeld may eventually sign a longer deal, though it was a joint decision to only extend it by a year.

Hitzfeld said he was enjoying working with Munich and "pleased to be able to continue my work here".

"In the past week I realized how much I enjoy the work here and I believe that the team and myself can really make something happen."

Hitzfeld garnered four league titles in five seasons at Bayern through 2003, winning 16 major trophies in total.

Munich currently stood at the fourth place in the Bundesliga before his arrival, but the team is gaining strength under him and reached the Champions League quarter-finals against AC Milan after beating nine-time champions Real Madrid in the round of 16.
