The Beijing Olympic Games will seta new record for revenues generated by the marketing program, organizers said on Wednesday.

"We are very optimistic of meeting our goal and the revenues of the Beijing Olympics may exceed that of any previous games," Yuan Bin, director of the marketing department at the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG), told a news conference.

BOCOG said last year that the games' operating cost has increased from the original forecast of 1.609 billion US dollars to around 2 billion dollars, though its initial target of making a net profit of 16 million dollars was still achievable.

So far, a total of 48 enterprises from home and abroad have been signed up as sponsors for the Beijing Games, making it one of the most successful games in terms of marketing program.

With its sponsorship plan coming to a close soon, BOCOG will shift its focus to merchandising this year, said Yuan.

"By the end of this year, the number of Olympic merchandise stores in the country will reach 2,000, and licensed goods will also start going on sale overseas this year," she said.

A range of 4,000 products -- most featuring the five "Fuwa" mascots -- are already on sale in more than 500 outlets in 70 cities around the country.

Yuan said that BOCOG is committed to its promise of rooting out ambush marketing and counterfeit Olympic products.

"We attach great importance to the counterfeiting activities, and we are working closely with our legal department on this," Yuan said.

"When we find a case we deal with it very immediately."
