A balanced French basketball team edged European champion Greece 72-68 on Saturday in Nanning, East China at the preliminary round of the Stankovic Continental Champions Cup.

Germany pocketed the group B No.1 position with a 76-75 win over Brazil in later game. Germany beat China 82-73 on Friday.

The winners of the group stage will meet up for the championship while the runners-up vying in the 3-4 placing finals.

France could take the final berth if it defeats Oceanian champions Australia, who lost to Greece 68-60 on Friday, on Saturday.

Michael Gelabale scored 10 points, the only double digit scorer of the French, to put up the European third placers at a better position to shoot the title.

San Antonio Spurs' guard Tony Parker had six points while Phoenix Suns' forward Boris Diaw had nine points and six rebounds for France, who is bracketed with Greece and Australia in Group A.

The Greeks took an early lead but let the Frenchmen close it up to 36-35 to call the first half.

France had the first lead on 40-39 two minutes into the third quarter, and never looked back for the victory of the opener.

Zizis Nikolaos, the game high scorer, led Greece with 12 points. Germany slimly held back Brazil's last-minute surge-up to nail down the final berth.

Trailing for most of the game, Brazil had the first lead when Lenadro Mateus Barbosa's lay-up hit the top of the basket and got a three-point play to make it 67-66 with 4:33 minutes to go.

Dirk Nowitzki, who had 18 points and 16 rebounds, and Patrick Femerling put Germany back to lead 75-69, but Marcelo Huertas' leveledit 75-75 with 34 seconds left on a turn-around lay-up.

Femerling buried one free-throw for Germany before Alex Garcia missed his last 3-pointer try before the buzzer.

Anderson Varejao had the game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds for Brazil.
