Ten-man India edged China's Under-20 side 2-1 on Sunday to finish in third place at the Whitecaps Nations Cup soccer tournament in Vancouver.

The Indian national side were beaten 3-1 by hosts Vancouver Whitecaps in their opening match of the tournament but Bobby Houghton's charges bounced back to beat the Chinese youngsters despite the first-half dismissal of Renedy Singh.

Naduparambil Pappachan Pradeep opened the scoring for India after 28 minutes, but just five minutes later, they found themselves reduced to 10 players after Renedy Singh was shown the red card.

The Chinese side turned up the pressure with the man advantage but they found themselves trailing by two goals in the 66th minute when Manjit Singh redirected a lob by Steven Dais into the net.

Tang Jiashu pulled back a goal for the China U-20s 10 minutes later but India hung on for the win.

The Whitecaps claimed the title after winning a penalty shootout against Welsh side Cardiff City in the final following a goalless draw between the sides.

India's next competitive match is an Asian Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia in Kolkota on August 16.
