McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen won the Belgian Grand Prix for the second year in a row on Sunday to keep Renault's Fernando Alonso waiting for the Formula One title.
Spaniard Alonso, who needed to beat the Finn by four points to become the youngest champion at the age of 24, finished runner-up.
He recognised his good fortune after inheriting the position from McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya, who crashed out three laps from the end, and heads for Brazil in two weeks' time with every hope of being crowned there instead.
With three races remaining, Alonso has a comfortable 25-point lead and a third place will be enough for him at Interlagos, even if Raikkonen wins again.
"The conditions were pretty difficult for everyone today," saidAlonso. "With the position in the championship, we didn't need to risk."
Montoya collided with the Williams of Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia, who had just come out of the pits and was trying to unlap himself, on a wet track while following Raikkonen home.
Until then, McLaren were heading for their first one-two finishin five years as well as the overall lead in the constructors' championship.
