Marathon:Zhou Chunxiu claims Xiamen International Marathon women's title
Latest Updated by 2005-03-29 10:26:16

Zhou Chunxiu led a Chinese clean sweep in top three places at the women's group of the Xiamen International Marathon here on Saturday.

Zhou, fresh from her triumph in the Seoul Marathon early this month, stayed in the leading pack throughout the grueling race of 42.195 kilometers starting from the Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center and pulled away just before the 37-kilometer mark to win in two hours 29 minutes and 58 seconds.

It was Zhou's third straight title at the Xiamen Marathon, which was created in 2003. She pocketed a prize money of 15,000 US dollars.

Sun Weiwei from Liaoning province was second in 2:31:11, and Zhang Shujing, a Jilin University student, third in 2:31:57.

Zhou, who began to run marathon in 2002, said she was happy with the result.

"It was a little harder than last year, because I have just come from the Seoul marathon held two weeks ago," Zhou said.

"I am satisfied with my performance, as I didn't have enough time to adjust my form within two weeks.

"Now I will start to prepare for the 10th National Games. To this ends, I will adjust my form for the Games. I'm very confident," she added.

Kenya's Raymond Kipkoech won the men's group in 2:9:49. Shimelis Mola came second in 2:10:51, followed by his Ethiopian compatriot Tekeste Kebede in 2:12:03.
