The 3-D version of Disney's animated feature "Meet the Robinsons" grossed 7.1 million U.S. dollars this weekend, making it the largest digital 3-D opening in film history, Disney officials said Monday.
The 3-D version was shown on 581 screens across the United States, and the 7.1-million-dollar take represented 28 percent of the film's overall three-day gross of 25.1 million dollars. The film finished second at the box office to the comedy "Blades of Glory," which earned 33 million dollars.
Chuck Viane, president of Disney's Buena Vista Pictures Domestic Distribution, said the film managed to break records even though the average size of the theaters showing the 3-D version is just 243 seats.
"The fantastic success of 'Meet the Robinsons' this weekend and especially in its 3-D engagements is a clear signal that 3-D is bigger and better than ever," Viane said. "This weekend's historic achievement represents a great collaboration with the exhibition community."
"Meet the Robinsons" represented the widest opening ever for a digital 3-D release, and played in six times the number of theaters as Disney's "Chicken Little" in 2005. Disney officials estimated that there will be 1,200 screens available to play digital 3-D by the end of the year.
