"Open Season," a Sony Picture's movie about animals beating hunters, topped box office in the the weekend, bring in 23.6 million dollars, final figures showed Monday.

Open Season's win gives Sony a record 11 number- one openings this year.

The action-adventure drama "The Guardian" about an elite Coast Guard training program debuted in second place with a take of 18 million dollars, according to the Encino-based box office tracker Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.

"Jackass: Number Two," last week's winner, dropped to third place (14.6 million dollars), followed by comedy "School for Scoundrels" (8.6 million dollars).

Jet Li's "Fearless," the martial arts epic that opened in second place last week, dropped three spots to fifth with a take of 5 million dollars.

Rounding out the top 12 were: "Gridiron Gang" (4.6 million dollars); "The Illusionist" (2.7 million dollars ); "Flyboys" (2.4 million dollars); "The Black Dahlia" (2.1 million dollars);"Little Miss Sunshine" (2 million dollars); "All The King's Men" (1.5 million dollars); and "Facing the Giants" (1.3 million dollars).

The top 12 films grossed 86.5 million dollars this weekend, nearly 15 percent higher than the 75.3 million taken in during the same period last year.

It was also the first "up" weekend after three "down" weekends at the box office, but 22 of the last 28 weekends have surpassed last year's box office numbers.
