The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Department of Architecture has proposed to initiate a joint university research programme focusing on environmentally sustainable design, planning strategies, urban conservation, property development and architectural advancement in the Pearl River Delta region.

The three-year programme will initiate new research as well as consolidate results from previous and ongoing projects related to the regional developments of the Pearl River Delta carried out by CUHK's Departments of Architecture (and other departments within the university's Faculty of Social Science) as well as by the South China University of Technology based in Guangzhou.

This research programme will be supported by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, Hong Kong SAR government, Shenzhen and Guangzhou and other organizations in southern China.

The programme will develop methods relevant to studying with greater precision and sensitivity the planning and urban strategies, as well as the architectural and environmental designs occurring within the Pearl River Delta region.

Research results and design work will be exhibited and presented at academic and professional conferences, and published both regionally and internationally.

Whenever possible, research results will also be disseminated through the realization of pilot projects.

In the quest for economic prosperity, the rapidly urbanizing Pearl River Delta has not, until recently, demonstrated a high priority for environmental protection.
