Work on SARS vaccine
Latest Updated by 2003-04-30 15:51:55
A SARS vaccine is expected within several months, sources at the key lab of virology at the Ministry of Health said.
According to Yuan Zhenghong, director of the lab and team leader of the Shanghai Aetiology Research team, Shanghai is cooperating with Hong Kong and Guangzhou to introduce virus samples and experimental facilities.
Shanghai will submit a technical proposal soon. The Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica under the Chinese Academy of Sciences will also join in this project. Ding Jian, vice chief of the institute, said it usually takes 8 to 12 years to create a new medicine, so the urgent task now is to directly abstract an anti-viral drug from the effective medicines currently being used.
