Subway operations suspended by tests
Latest Updated by 2003-05-07 14:30:40

Trains will cease running along the first section of Line Two of the Guangzhou Metro between May 8 and June 27 in preparation for the completion of the route.

Workers will move in to carry out general debugging of the whole line, which will run from Sanyuanli to Pazhou in the capital of South China's Guangdong Province.

The pause will affect all stations from Sanyuanli to Xiaogang.

"General adjustments and tests along the whole line is necessary before it can open," said a source with Guangzhou Metro Corp.

Tests on the Sanyuanli to Xiaogang section began on December 29. The line intersects with Line One at Gongyuanqian station.

The opening of the first section of Line Two relieved passenger pressure during the Spring Festival period.

According to Guangzhou Metro, trains on Line One will continue to run normally while the work is carried out.

Line One runs from the northeast of the city to the southwest whereas Line Two starts in the northwest and heads to the southeast.

General testing will begin with individual items, including the power supply system, power supervision system, traffic, communication, signals, track, automatic ticket checking system and the fire warning system.

A systematic test will follow, including drills to remove obstacles when trains are operating, emergency evacuations of passengers from the stations and the quick channelling of passengers in metro stations.

No specific date for the completion of Line Two has been released.

Guangzhou is one of the Chinese mainland's leading cities that runs subways. The other cities include Beijing and Shanghai.

Guangzhou is planning to expand its metro lines in the future, which are among 30 major infrastructure projects the city will build in the coming years. Total investment could exceed 110 billion yuan (US$13 billion).
