Responsible retailers in Shenzhen
Latest Updated by 2003-04-24 11:07:28

Major retailers in the city have taken ample precautions to provide safe and healthy products and environments to dissipate shoppers' fears of possible infection of SARS.

These measures include a thorough and professional clean-up and disinfection after operating hour, regular disinfection of shopping facilities like the baskets, trolleys, and autowalks during the day, mandating workers in the fresh food area to wear masks and gloves, and requiring employees to report their health condition everyday.

"We always pay great attention to the hygiene of our store and just enhance relevant measures in this case," said Eric Thevenet, the store manager of Carrefour in Nantou.

The professional cleaning company hired by Carrefour cleans up not only the store but also the neighboring area close to Carrefour, Thevenet said.

Mrs. Wang, assistant to the general manager of Shirble, said the company had replaced the normal washing soap in toilets with an antibacterial one and equipped ultraviolet lamps in the food shelves, in addition to the above measures.

Shenzhen's retailers have adopted the measures before China General Chamber of Commerce made an announcement Monday requiring sufficient precautions be taken by retailers nationwide. In the statement, the organization in particular mentioned that workers in the food area in supermarkets, stores and marketplaces must wear masks and gloves.

Zhang Xiaodong, the assistant to the secretary general of Shenzhen Retail Business Association, said it had asked all its members to designate a person to be responsible for the disinfection work and to ensure a sufficient supply of disinfection products to customers.

The proactive attitude adopted by Shenzhen retailers seems work well. Thevenet with Carrefour said they recorded 10,000 customer transactions daily on weekdays and 15,000 on weekends since April.

Zeng Qiang, the public relation manager with Wal-Mart, said the flow of customers was stable at Wal-Mart stores. "People trust us as we are a responsible company," said Zeng.
