Advocate of affordable education
Latest Updated by 2003-05-06 15:27:34

While well-off parents in Shenzhen send their children to expensive classes in mushrooming English or international schools, Sam Sharp contends that education must be made more affordable.

Educated in his native country Iran, India and Canada, Sharp experienced similar financial difficulties as many Chinese migrant workers do in seeking further education.

This is why he advocates affordable education and puts his belief into practice: His English training center in Fuyong Township, Bao'an District, offers discounts to those who face financial difficulties and lack academic backgrounds.

Four migrant workers even received free training.

"I've found many migrant workers in Shenzhen earn very minimal salaries and they must send a part of their salaries home in inland areas every month."

"My training department is small in size, but I try my best to accommodate these diligent, sincere and hard working individuals," Sharp said.

Although small, his training center at the cultural center in Fuyong has been visited by a number of senior officials.

Their visits were a great honor for Sharp and served as huge encouragement.

He left Iran for higher education in India in 1978 and in 1982, he migrated to Canada.

Sharp first came to Shenzhen in 1995, beginning his career as an English teacher in Bao'an District. His English training center in Fuyong began operating in 1999.
