Congee, a perfect autumn food
Latest Updated by 2003-09-16 10:03:38

WHEN damp summer gives way to dry autumn, people often feel uncomfortable with sore throat, dry skin and other ailments caused by the dry weather. What you need most now is liquid food, such as congee.

Congee can help generate saliva and remedy dryness. If other foods such as pear, radish or sesame are added to congee, its curative properties will be enhanced.

Pear congee

Pear congee is regarded as a good healthy food for autumn because pears ease dryness. To make pear congee, cut up two whole pears and boil them together with 100g of rice.

Sesame congee

Sesame congee can help treat constipation, coughs and dizziness. To make sesame congee, fry 50g of sesame seeds until they become crisp, then mash them. Boil 100g of rice and add the mashed sesame seeds.

Carrot congee

Carrot contains carotene which becomes vitamin A after it enters the body. As vitamin A is good for the skin, carrot congee is very helpful for dry skin. To make the congee, fry carrot with vegetable oil and then boil it with 100g of rice.

Chrysanthemum congee

Boil 60g of chrysanthemum and then put 100g of rice into the soup and boil them together. This congee can help treat colds, dry throat and sore eyes, and help prevent cardiovascular system diseases.
