Zhang Ziyi in Korean films again
Latest Updated by 2003-08-25 10:40:20

ONE of People magazine's 50 most beautiful people in the world in 2001, Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi has agreed to star in the third episode of My Wife Is a Gangster. She has even proposed to put up half the investment of the film.

Zhang made the proposal after she finished her three-minute acting gig in My Wife Is a Gangster II: Return of the Legend.

The 2001 Korean hit My Wife Is a Gangster has done extremely well at the box office. It has been ranked first in South Korea and Hong Kong and was considered "a goose that can lay golden eggs." With its copyright sold to Hollywood, the film series can be expected to stir a worldwide whirlwind.

Zhang has only three-minute acting in My Wife Is a Gangster II. But these three minutes have been considered the selling point of the film.

The advertisement posters featured her.

When Zhang arrived in South Korea in early July, she was well received by Shin Eun-gyeong, the film's Korean heroine and one of its producers.

Zhang said she was very interested in Korean films and hoped to use the trip to communicate with people in South Korea's film industry.

Zhang became famous in South Korea mainly because of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in which she starred. After that she played in a movie called Warrior, in which she portrayed a princess taken hostage in the period of the war between the Yuan Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty. It was her first appearance in a Korean film which was made in a joint venture between Chinese and Korean producers. This year, Purple Butterfly that features her as the heroine, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

When asked at a press conference in Seoul why she agreed to accept a role that would be present in My Wife Is a Gangster II for only three minutes and not speak a single word, Zhang said she liked seeing Korean movies. With a deep impression she had from the first episode of the film, she agreed to play in the second episode.

Zhang also told the reporters she liked Shin Eun-gyeong, whom she described as a warm-hearted person.

Shin Eun-gyeong stayed with Zhang for most of her time in Seoul. Before her departure for home, Zhang sent the Korean actress a mobile phone message expressing her wish to work with her again. Shin responded by saying that she was looking forward to working with Zhang again.

An official of the production company recently announced that Zhang and Shin would jointly star in My Wife Is a Gangster III.
