Ministry mulls dropping some undergraduate courses
Latest Updated by 2006-07-19 10:03:40

The Ministry of Education is considering phasing out some existing undergraduate courses by 2008, the Beijing Morning Post reported yesterday (July 18).

University presidents attending a weeklong forum in Shanghai argued Monday that specializations such as management and law should be scrapped as undergraduate degrees.

The president of Beijing Normal University, Zhong Binglin, said courses such as educational, administration and commercial management are not practical for 18-year-old freshmen who don't have the relevant background or experience.

His view was echoed by the president of University of International Business and Economics, Chen Zhunmin, who said it is not easy for students majoring in management at his university to find a job.

Chen added it was impractical for undergraduate students to learn human resources management because most of them couldn't manage their own lives, let alone staff in a company.

Presently, University of International Business and Economics in Beijing only enrolls students to study human resources management every other year.

Xiamen University president Zhu Chongshi believes law should be taught only as an introductory course rather than a professional one course at the undergraduate level.

He said postgraduate law courses provide practical know-how for dealing with real problems, leaving little opportunity for undergraduates to compete in this field.

He advised those who have decided to study law to equip themselves with relevant knowledge before pursuing postgraduate study in the future.
