NCEE champ to study in Hong Kong
Latest Updated by 2006-07-18 09:15:02

SHENZHEN student Guo Cheng, 18, who achieved the maximum score at this year's National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE) in June, followed four other similar achievers in the province by choosing a Hong Kong university over prestigious mainland institutions for further studies.

However, Wang Canyong, the other Shenzhen student to score full marks at the NCEE, opted for Qinghua University.

With Hong Kong universities popular among mainland students this year, the cream of Shenzhen's high-school graduates is opting to study in Hong Kong.

According to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the average score of Shenzhen students who have enrolled at the university has reached a record high of 850 out of the NCEE maximum 900.

Besides an international environment and scholarships, mainland students can work in Hong Kong after graduating from a university there and even get permanent residence.

"The average monthly salary for our bachelor degree holders is HK$14,000 and the highest could reach HK$74,000," said a spokesman of the University of Hong Kong.

This year, more than 35,000 mainland students applied for the eight Hong Kong universities, a quarter of whom are Shenzhen students.
