Guangzhou youths find love in neighborhood

With more eligible young people stay single due to various social problems, youths in southern China's Guangzhou appear to have found a "new" place to find love: in their own communities.

A young man met his girlfriend at a badminton event held in his neighborhood. He says that as neighbors, he and his girlfriend have much in common. What's more, living in the same area shows they have similar educational and financial backgrounds.

Staff from one of the city's marriage registration centers says every month there are several new couples living in the same community who come to the center to register their marriages.

Sociologists have mixed reactions. Hu Shenzhi of the All-China Women's Federation says it shows the return of young people's love attitude to those from the past. When people still lived in hutongs or traditional alleys, they had good relations with their neighbors and usually found their partners through their neighbor's matchmaking efforts.

However, Professor Dong Yuzheng says that it also reflects modern urbanites' difficulties in finding love. They have few opportunities to meet more people except through their workmates or neighbors. They are forced to make choices within their small circles.
