Shenzhen Asiad gold medalist aims for 2008
Latest Updated by 2006-12-20 10:30:04

CHEN LINA, who bagged a sailing gold for China at the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, earlier this month, said Monday that her goal was to compete in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and win an Olympic gold and make Shenzhen proud, the Southern Metropolis Daily said yesterday (Dec 18).

Chen, 21, made the remarks at a ceremony in Yantian District held to felicitate her for her triumph.

Chen, who is a member of the Yantian sailing team, won the gold in the women's Mistral class sailing competition in Doha on Dec. 11. It was the fifth gold medal by a Shenzhen athlete.

Chen began sailing as an after-school hobby when she was a Junior One student in Haimen Middle School in Shantou in the northeast of Guangdong Province. She was chosen by the Yantian sailing team in 1999 to receive professional training because of her outstanding physical condition and composure.

"Being a professional sailor is much more challenging than I expected," said Chen, adding that she has to spend most of her time in the sea training.

She said she is committed to the sport as she derives much enjoyment and fulfillment from training and competitions, the newspaper said.

"I won't consider studying in university yet. I am making efforts to qualify the Beijing Olympics and hopefully win a gold for Shenzhen. I want to be Shenzhen's Lee Lai-shan," the Daily quoted Chen as saying. Lee won the first ever Olympic gold in the women's sailing Mistral event for Hong Kong in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
